Construction material | building material [ chapter 1]

Construction Material: [chapter 1]

  • concrete
  • cement
  • aggregates

concrete:

concrete is obtained by mixing cementing materials, water, aggregates and sometimes admixtures in required proportions. this mixture and when placed in forms and allowed to cure hardens into rock like mass known as concrete.

Few properties of concrete:

  1. versatile.
  2. resists fire.
  3. free from segregation and bleeding.
strong, durable, impermeable.

process of concrete:

  • batching.
  • mixing.
  • transporting and placing.
  • compacting.

 cement:

cement is manufactured by burning and then burning and then crushing the natural cement stones.which contain 20 to 40% of argillaceous clay mainly calcareous matter which better which is either calcium carbonate alone or mixture calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate.

types of cement:

ordinary Portland cement, rapid hardening cement, low heat cement, blast furnace slag cement.

two methods of manufacturing of cement is dry process and wet process.

Aggregates:

two types of aggregate:

  • coarse aggregate is defined as gravel.
  • fine aggregate is define as river sand.

physical properties:

specific gravity, bulk unit density, absorption and moisture content, bulking of aggregates

Mechanical properties:

 strength, toughness, bond,hardness

various test of aggregates:
  •  aggregates crushing test.
  •  aggregates impact value test.
  •  flakiness index test.
  •  elongation index test.
  •  sieve analysis test.
  •  water absorption.
